On Saturday May 2nd, we will be going on a hike on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. This will be an "Out & Back" starting at the Rt. 653 Trailhead near the old Park office. We will be hiking northbound on the trail in the direction of Seven Springs. We will encounter a beautiful Scenic Vista on the way and depending on how far we go, possibly the large boulder outcropping near mile marker 23. We will then turn back around and hike back out to the trailhead. After the hike, we will all meet up for Ice Cream up the road from the trail. The event is free to attend, but you will need to bring your own money for Ice Cream.
The portion of the trail we are hiking is the flattest and easiest section, but since we will be hiking multiple miles all hikers need to make sure they bring good supportive footwear. Hiking boots or high top shoes with ankle support are preferred if possible.
We will break somewhere along to trail to eat lunch. Please pack a brown bag lunch and carry it in a backpack with you. There will be no refrigeration so bring non-perishable food only.
Be sure to eat breakfast in the morning before you get to the hike.
More importantly - You will need plenty of water. Make sure you bring "at least" a liter (approx 32oz) of water for each hiker. For teens and adults, 2 liters per person would be better. Pack your water in your backpack, waist strap/holster or bring a camelback pack if you prefer one. Don't bring a canteen that hangs around your neck. You will end up with a brush burn by the end of the day if you do.
Dress in lightweight and loose fitting fabrics that are appropriate for hiking but also the weather. We will be in the mountains so it may be a couple degrees cooler than it is at home. Dress in layers if it is a cool day.
There will be no transportation from the church to the hike. Please meet us at the trailhead by 9AM sharp. The address below is shown on google maps as "Laurel Ridge Cross Country Ski Center" however it is the parking lot of the trailhead we will be meeting at.
1101 Jim Mountain Road, Rockwood, PA 15557
**If you don't have a dad or male adult who can come with you, please let Commander Jason know so he can try to find you a ride.
This hike will be weather permitting - but we will not cancel unless it is a total downpour or storm w/lightning.
